Discussion questions to further comprehension

The following is a list of suggested questions (increasing in difficulty) to assist you in engaging in discussions with your child about the books you have shared together:

  • What happened in the beginning middle and end of the story?
  • Who are the main characters in the story? What did you like/dislike about them?
  • What was your favourite part? Why?
  • Tell me about the (things, places, or characters) in this story.
  • What is the main idea of the story?
  • Retell the main events of the story in order.
  • Why do you think (pick a character) acted that way?
  • What was the setting?
  • What was the problem in the story and how was it solved?
  • How were (name two characters) alike/different from each other?
  • Does this story remind you of something (personal experience, another book, current/historical events)?
  • Summarize what happened in the story
  • Who are the characters in the story and what were they like? Support your view.
  • What do you think the author’s purpose was in writing this story? Support your view.
  • What was the author trying to tell the reader? Support your view.
  • What problem did the character face in the story? How did the character feel about the problem?
  • Why do you think (pick an event) happened that way? Support your view.
  • What was the main idea in the story? How do you know that? (support your view)
  • Analyze the characters, their traits and how they interact with each other in this story
